  • Albon - Sulfamethoxine

Albon is the most frequently used and prescribed med for the use in controlling Coccidiosis. Albon is a Brand Name with the active ingredient of Sulfadimethoxine. It is however often not used as per manufacturer recommendation. Albon's active ingredient of Sulfadimethoxine which is most often found in Bovine (*Cattle) meds is an antibiotic used to treat Respiratory, wounds and a wide variety of other ailments in animals. Albon is the mixed more palatable form of Coccidia medicines. The dosage for Sulfamethoxine can vary greatly depending on whether or not it has been added to another liquid to make it more palatable. Sulfadimethoxine alone is a very untasty med so is often mixed with products like Dyne to make it more palatable thus easier to administer. It takes 21 days to break the life-cycle of the Protozoan Coccidia. Why most vets and breeders choose to only give Sulfamethoxine for only 5 days is unknown to me as Sulfamethoxine has a very short half life in the intestine unlike Marquis and Baycox. It could be the reason why though so many breeders get calls from Puppy Buyers that their puppy has Coccidiosis as it was not treated properly while in their care. "Albon" 5% Oral Suspension is normally given at 2 1/2 cc per 5# body weight at initial (*1st) dose followed by 1 1/4 cc per 5# for subsequent daily doses. Albon should be given early in the course of the disease to achieve better results and is recommended to be continued for a minimum of 48 hours after all systems disappear. It is recommended for the initial (*1st) dose be via Albon 40% Injectible in order to obtain effective blood levels in the treated animal. Albon can be found in Oral (*liquid), table or Injectible form.Albon is an RX drug and must be gotten by prescription or from your Vet.Sulfadimethoxine however can be purchased OTC (*Over the counter) in cattle form. Sulfadimethoxine should only be used under the advise and care of your Veterinarian.

Baycox is a med used to control Coccidiosis in Pigs. It's active ingredient is Toltrazuril. Baycox is a RX drug and is very hard if not impossible to get. Suggested dosage is 1/10th of a CC per pound of body weight given at 6 and 8 weeks of age. Dam should be treated as well to keep her from reinfecting the offspring. Baycox is not labeled for Canine use. Baycox should only be used under the advisement and care of your Veterinarian. I haven't heard of any side affects but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist.

Marquis is an Antiprotozoan med used in Equines (*Horses) for treatment of a disease in horses caused by a Protozoan that causes swelling of the brain called Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (*Encephilitis). It has been discovered however that it helps control Coccidiosis in dogs. Marquis is an RX drug and can only be purchased by Prescription or through your Veterinarian. Dosage is 1/10th of a CC per pound given every 2 weeks starting at 2 weeks of age. The dam should be dosed as well to prevent her from reinfecting the offspring. There have been reports of smaller breed puppies having seizures after being dosed. Whether or not the seizures were caused from overdozing or a reaction to the drug is unknown. Marquis has an active ingredient of 15% Ponazuril. Marquis is not labeled for canine use. Marquis should only be used by the advice and under the care of your Veterinarian.
