Strongid - Pyrantel

Pyrantel is most often recognized by the call name "Strongid". It is the active ingredient in many de-wormers from human pinworm to horse, cattle, pig and dog wormer. It is the active ingredient in Nemex 2 and D-Worm.The base formula of 50 mg is dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 4.5 pounds. Be sure you always check your base formula and dose accordingly. Most kennels treat at 10 day intervals in order to catch the life-cycle of Round and Hook worms. Pyrantel willNOT control Whip or Tape worms.Pyrantel is considered to be a fairly safe wormer but as with all meds should always be used under the advise and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian.

Ivermectin - IVOMEC

Ivermectin (*Ivomec) is used for control of Round and Hook worms. It can alsobe used to kill the larvae stages of Heartworms. It is labeled for the treatment of Cattle and Swine but is used off-label for canines.The 1% Cattle formula is dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 60 pounds for the control ofround, hook and heart worms. To control heartworms it must be given on a regular30 day cycle as it does not kill the developed heart worm but instead kills the larvae stage preventing it from maturing into the worm.Ivomec should be used only by experienced breeders and under the advice and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian. An overdose of Ivomec can caused majormedical issues and death. Ivomec has shown to be fatal (*causes death) in Collieand herding breeds so it should never be used on these type breeds.

Praziquantel - Tape Wormer

Praziquantel is the active ingredient in Tape Worm meds. It is sold under a variety of brand names including D-Worm Praziquantel Tablets.34 mg praziquantel is dosed at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 pounds body weight.Praziquantel only controls Tape Worms therefore it is often combined with other wormers for a more effective All Around Wormer such as Drontal Plus, Wormout and a variety of other brand names. Praziquantel should only be used when visible Tape Worm segments or threads (*chains) are seen on the dog or in it's environment. A tape worm looks like a piece of rice and the segments are linked together to form a white connected thread that looks like a chain. Visible worms and chains will be expelled after using the de-wormer if Tape Worms are present. Praziquantal should only be used under the advise and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian.

Fenbendazole - Safeguard

Fenbendazole is most readily known by the brand name "Safeguard". It is used in Dogs, Cattle, Horses, Sheep and Swine as a de-wormer for Round, Hook and Whip worms. Safeguard is NOT active against Tape Worms. Unlike most wormers on the market Fenbendazole works to break down the enzymes in the worm thus allowing the digestive track to digest the worm itself thus expelling it as what looks like a jello type glob. Seldom will you see the actual live or dead worms when using Fenbendazole.Fenbendazole also must be used over a period of time to be effective. Fenbendazole is dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 4.5 pounds body weight for consecutive 3 to 5 days for Round and Hook worms. For Whip worms it must be dosed at the rate of 1 cc per 4.5 pounds per body weight for 5 days and repeated in 30 and 60 days at the same 1 cc per 4.5 pounds per body weight for 5 days.Fenbendazole will not work if not dosed correctly and in the time frame required to kill the worms.Fenbendazole is also used to control Giardia.Fenbendazole should only be used under the advise and supervision of a Licensed Veterinarian.

Drontal Plus

Drontal Plus is the most brand name recognized and most used All Around wormer on the market today. It is a combination of active ingredient meds that controls Round, Hook, Whip and Tape worms eliminating the need for a variety of wormers and multiple day doses.Wormout via Vetafarm has the active ingredients of 225 mg Oxibendazole and 50 mg Praziquantel. It is a broad spectrum wormer which controls Round, Hook, Whip and Tape worms. It is dosed at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 pounds but is scored so can be broken down into smaller dosages. It also comes in several other dosage packages for smaller or larger size dogs.Drontal is an RX controlled med and can only be gotten by Prescription or from a licensed Veterinarian. It shoudl only be used under the advise and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian.
